The Centre
Facility Development
The Harvard Historical Aviation Centre was
conceived in November 2006 by a
group of people interested in preserving and celebrating the unique history of the Penhold
military base, with particular emphasis on the role the base played in
the training of NATO pilots during the cold war years.
The Harvard Historical Aviation Society was established
in February 2007 for the purpose of creating the centre and exploring
ways to commemorate the various roles of the base in interactive ways.
Another goal was to create programs for involving youth in the
celebration of aviation.
The
society recently acquired a lease from Red Deer County for up to 10
acres of land for a permanent location close to the main entrance of the former Penhold base site, now Springbrook,
at a prominent location close to the Red Deer Regional Airport.
In addition, the society is working with Red Deer County in its initiative to
create an aviation heritage theme for the area.
One of the highlights in 2007 was the mounting on a
pedestal by the Red Deer Flying Club of the last Harvard (370) flown at RCAF Station Penhold
located close to the terminal entrance of the Red Deer Regional Airport.
